The Relationship Between Video Games and Problem-Solving Skills

Video games like Street Fighter II, Secret of Monkey Island and Super Mario World are considered the pinnacle of the video games industry. They are tremendously technologically advanced for their time and require a high level of skill on a variety of different platforms and playing styles. They are competitively priced, have multiple levels and various game play possibilities. They require highly advanced skill sets from their players and the ability to work in a team environment to succeed.

Console video games were developed for a handful of different markets. Consoles mainly cater to the adult market, while handhelds are aimed at children. The PSP is currently the leading portable game console. Other names include Nintendo Wii, Nintendo DS and Xbox.

In terms of game development, the researchers describe three primary feedback devices. The primary feedback device comes from the game's user interface, or the screen and controller. The second feedback comes from the game's engine, or the core software. And thirdly, the user experience, or the general experience from playing the video games. These three feedback mechanisms can provide the researchers with a wide range of data regarding the success of a new video game, its profitability, and user experience.

The researchers describe how computer games differ from video games in this report. Unlike computer games, most arcade games involve multiple player interactions and rely on the player's timing to beat the clock and beat the competition. However, arcade games also incorporate aspects of strategy and problem solving. Video games on the other hand, depend entirely on the player's ability to create an environment that simulates an active experience in real life.

While video games are primarily controlled by the player, researchers note that video games also have an internal structure created by the gaming hardware itself. For instance, a video game console relies on a CPU to process information and deliver commands to the video game player. A CPU is much more complex than a personal computer. Its main function is to process basic instructions sent from the gaming device to the central processing unit or CPU. Once the command is received from the CPU, the chip performs additional tasks like memory operation, logic operations, and output processing.

One reason why games console manufacturers keep on changing their hardware is to gain new features and reduce costs. New features in video games may include better visual effects, better interface functions, faster game play, and increased character levels. Manufacturers also make use of technology like HDCP to protect the quality of game files from piracy. Many people worry that with the growing popularity of online multiplayer gaming, they may no longer be able to enjoy games that were once only available to a small group of elite gamers. However, experts claim that as long as the gaming console itself is connected to the internet, anyone can play. Online multiplayer gaming is expected to continue growing in popularity as gaming devices become more compact and more capable.

Gamers play video games because they solve problems using problem-solving skills. Gamers are able to improve their problem-solving skills while engaging in various competitive activities online. This helps them develop problem-solving skills and work on their problem solving methods. Most research shows that gamers are not more creative than non-gamers. However, researchers found that non-gamers were able to solve problems more effectively using problem solving games and were able to develop better problem-solving skills than non-gamers.

How Video Games May Benefit Your Child's Life?

Adults often play video games to pass the time, while children engage in imaginative play. Imagination is a key element of childhood development and video games that foster this development are of great benefit to children who engage in this type of activity. In fact, recent studies have indicated that video games that incorporate imagination, strategy, and simulation are beneficial to the growth and psychological well-being of young adolescents. The ability to imagine and create are essential life skills that become important throughout the course of adolescence. Not only are video games mentally stimulating, they are also educational. Educational psychologist Mary P. Reardon, Ph.D., author of How Video Games Lead to Learning and Memory, believes that video games can enhance learning in ways that books and television cannot. Dr. Reardon speculates that playing video games allows children to think critically and to apply what they learn in a real-life situation. This intellectual...
